The Dental Implant Process

placement

During your dental implant placement, your doctor will make a small incision in your gums to securely place the dental implant in the jaw. Next, the area will be cleaned and sutured to begin the healing process, ensuring a comfortable recovery.

Healing

The incision site will be healed in 1-2 weeks. However, it will take 3-6 months for the implant to bond with your jawbone. We will schedule a few check-ups throughout the process to confirm you are healing properly.

Restoration

After the implant bonds with your jaw, we will place your custom-designed restoration, typically a dental crown. It securely attaches to the implant with an abutment. Your smile will be fully restored once your new tooth is in place!

Our philosophy

Drs. Devin and Alex are committed to excellence in serving their community. They are members of the Capital District Continuum for Advanced Dental Education and believe in life long learning to provide the best possible care for their patients. Their inspiration to practice dentistry began with a desire to serve others. Both doctors were awarded the American Dental Association’s Certificate for International Volunteer Service in 2018. They served as leaders of Stony Brook University’s School of Dental Medicine's Dental Mission to Madagascar for many years. These varied experiences in dental education and service have shaped them into caring and experienced practitioners who are excited to serve their local communities in Saratoga Springs and Gloversville.

Education

Dr. Devin S. Harrison earned his D.D.S at Stony Brook University’s School of Dental Medicine

Dr. Devin became a Tar Heel that summer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to complete a General Practice Residency.

Dr. Alexandra Porcu earned her D.D.S. at Stony Brook University’s School of Dental Medicine with Distinction in Research, Distinction in Removable Prosthodontics, the Humanitarian Award, and the Senior Student Dental Award.

Local & Global Outreach

Drs. Devin and Alex are committed to serving their community both at home and abroad. Both are recipients of the American Dental Association’s Certificate for International Volunteer Service.

Do Dental Implants Stop Bone Loss?

Yes. After losing a tooth, your jaw will no longer be stimulated by the natural pressure of chewing and biting. This causes bone loss to occur and also weakens the jaw bone. When the dental implant post is placed, it will bond directly into the jaw bone and act as an artificial tooth root. This titanium “tooth root” transmits the force of chewing and biting through the dental crown and into your jawbone just like a real tooth would, keeping it healthy and strong.

How Are Dental Implants Made?

Titanium dental implants are made in trusted laboratories that supply a wide selection of pre-selected standard post sizes. The crown, on the other hand, is a custom-made tooth replacement. This ensures you get a personalized result that meets your needs and wishes. Most crowns are crafted out of porcelain, which is durable and matches your natural smile. Once your crown is ready, we will complete the procedure by securely attaching your implant crown in place.

How Long Will My Dental Implant Last?

When placed properly and maintained with care through good at-home hygiene and regular checkups, dental implants can last for 30 years or more. In fact, it’s common for patients to keep their implants for the rest of their lives. The implant restoration, however, may not last as long.
